As we approach International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8, 2025, we reaffirm our commitment to combating sexual harassment and supporting survivors. 

This newsletter highlights recent developments in the UK, provides information on upcoming events, particularly those organised by trade unions, and offers support resources.

Recent News Highlights

1. The BBC admits it “missed opportunities”: In another high-profile case of sexual misconduct at the BBC, DJ Tim Westward has now been accused by 18 women over 25 years in what has been described as “an open secret”. 

2. McDonalds UK Faces Legal Action Over Harassment Claims: Over 700 current and former McDonalds employees in the UK are planning legal action against the company, alleging widespread workplace misconduct, including sexual harassment, discrimination, and racism. Investigations have uncovered a toxic culture within the organisation, with some managers accused of exploiting young female workers.

3. Foxtons CEO Accused of Fostering Toxic Workplace Culture: The chief executive of Foxtons, London’s largest estate agency, faces allegations of promoting a work environment marked by sexual harassment, racism, and bullying. Employees reported instances of misconduct and a lack of support when raising concerns.

4. Financial Conduct Authority to Introduce Stricter Harassment Rules: Senior women in the financial sector are urging the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to maintain a strict stance on sexual harassment and bullying. New rules are expected to provide clear guidelines for addressing non-financial misconduct within the industry.

5. Mohamed Al-Fayed Accused of Multiple Sexual Assaults: Over 200 women have come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against the former owner of Harrods, Mohamed Al-Fayed. The accusations span several decades, highlighting systemic issues within his organisations.

International Women’s Day 2025, March 8, 2025: IWD is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. This years theme, Accelerate Action focuses on advancing and celebrating women’s equality worldwide.

Trade Union Events:

TUC Women’s Conference 2025: The Trades Union Congress (TUC) is hosting its annual Women’s Conference from March 5-7, 2025, at Congress House in London. This conference addresses workplace harassment, gender equality, and Women’s rights in the labour movement. Please note that this conference is not open to the public; attendance is limited to nominated members of TUC-affiliated unions.

BFAWU Are Celebrating Women in their Union All March. March is Women’s History Month, and they celebrate the amazing women who have influenced, become active, and made the union strong. 

Unite the Union International Women’s Day Reception: To celebrate IWD, Unite the Union is organising a reception on March 5, 2025, at Conway Hall in London. The event will feature discussions on women’s achievements and ongoing challenges in the workplace.

USDAW’s IWD Initiatives: The Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (USDAW) promotes IWD by encouraging members to participate in activities celebrating women’s achievements and advocating for gender equality. Details of specific events can be found on their website.

UNISON Southeast IWD Webinars: As part of the celebrations for International Women’s Day, UNISON South East is running a number of online education sessions. These are free to attend and open to all members.

International Women’s Day Conference: Scheduled for March 7, 2025, this conference aims to inspire and empower women through a series of talks and workshops.

International Women’s Day 2025 Celebration, Accelerating Action: Taking place on March 11, 2025, at the Riverside Innovation Centre in Chester, this event focuses on accelerating action towards gender equality.
